(March 31) Linn Hemberg, an environmental science researcher in perioperative and intensive care, defended her thesis, "Critical Care, Critical Emissions: Applying life cycle assessment on intensive and perioperative care," on March 30, 2026. As one of the many talented members of the REDUSE clinical trial group, Dr. Hemberg has lent her expertise in environmental sustainability--one of the key outcomes of the REDUSE study.

Using life cycle assessment to examine the environmental footprint of current healthcare products and activities, her thesis concluded that the climate impact of intensive and perioperative care can best be mitigated by replacing single-use items with reusable alternatives and by incorporating renewable energy.

The REDUSE team applauds Linn for her achievement and is grateful for her contributions to this important trial.
